Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
