Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes
The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
