The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
